SDRAM (synchronous dynamic RAM) is a type of Random Access Memory (RAM) that operates in sync with the system clock. It was invented in the late 1980s by IBM to reduce the latency and improve the speed and efficiency of early DRAM memory which has an asynchronous design. This kind of DRAM interface allows for faster & more efficient data handling.
SDRAM is about twice as fast as its predecessor EDO-RAM. As SDRAM performed much better than asynchronous DRAM by aligning its speed with the computer's clock it became essential for high-performance computing environments.
By 2000, SDRAM had replaced virtually all other types of DRAM in modern computers, because of its greater performance and although it was replaced by DDR SDRAM in the early 2000s, it is still used in legacy applications today.
